Abstract

By acidification of an aqueous solution of Rb2MoO4 with sulfuric acid the rubidium trimolybdatosulfate Rb2SMo3O13 · 0.72 H2O is formed. A compound with the same composition and evidently the same structure but free of crystal water is obtainable by melting a mixture of Rb2SO4 and MoO3 in molar ratios 1:3. The X-ray structure investigation shows the anion to be built up from double chains of MoO6 octahedra. Always three neighbouring octahedra are linked about common vertices with one SO4 tetrahedron. The tetrahedra are alternating above and below the double chain. - Rb2SMo3O13 is the first known macromolecular heteropolymolybdate.
