Abstract

A simple procedure for the preparation of tetra- kis(halomercuri)methanes C(HgX)4 (X = F, Cl, Br and I) from Hofmann’s base (“oxymercarbide”) and aqueous hydrohalic acids is described. Under the reaction conditions used, degradation of the CHg4 moieties present in Hofmann’s base also occurs, in­creasing in the series HF ≈ HC1 < HBr < HI.
