Tetracaine, Fluorescence, Erythrocyte Membrane The fluorescence of tetracaine depends on the micro-environment of the molecule and increases with increasing hydrophobicity. The presence of erythrocyte membranes strongly enhances tetracaine fluorescence. The results support the view that the alkyl chain and aromatic part of tetracaine is embedded in apolar regions of the lipid or protein phase of the membrane.
