Abstract
Glasses of methyltetrahydrofurane and of ethanol containing small amounts of triethylborate have been irradiated with γ-rays and with thermal neutrons. The yields of solvated electrons in the irradiated glasses were calculated from their optical absorption at 1200 and 540 mg, respectively. G (e⊖ solv) was found to amount to 0.09 ± 0.04 and 0.14 ± 0.05, respectively, when He- and Liparticles from the nuclear reaction 10B (n, α)7Li acted on the samples. G (e®solv) for γ-radiation has been found by HAMILL et al. to be equal to about 3.0 in both cases. Since the solvated electrons in both glasses are thermally very unstable, the heat produced in the track of a He- or Li-particle may in part be made responsible for the low yields of trapped electrons.
