Abstract
Abstract
Prize contests and prize questions formed quite an important aspect of 18th century’s public sphere. They were issued by corporations such as academies or enlightenment societies as well as by private persons. Academic prize questions have been studied, but they have so far not been set into the wider perspective of public discourse, including newspapers, journals and books. This discourse challenged persons of every rank and standing to submit their ideas on improving pretty well anything from hats or stoves to agricultural techniques and social or metaphysical issues, even literature – in return they awarded a prize and honorable publication.
