Abstract
Nearly monochromatic electrons of low energy (0 - 200 eV) which pass through nitrogen of small pressure dissociate the N2 molecule in a single collision into excited atoms or ions which emit a radiation in the extreme ultraviolet. The registered wavelengths can be attributed to known transitions. The excitation functions and appearance potentials of these dissociation processes are measured. In some cases the electron configuration of the second dissociation product can be determined from the appearance potentials. Furthermore it is shown that the gas-ionizing radiation of N2 is due to these dissociation processes.
