Abstract
The photochemical dehydrocyclization of stilbene resulting in phenanthrene has been examined quantitatively. From measurements of rate and quantum yields, it follows that the reaction only starts from the cis form of the stilbene molecule. A new mechanism was suggested involving the short-lived first excited singlet state of cis stilbene.
