In contradiction to the experience the hydrodimer is formed as the main product in the electroreduction of coumarine using lithium compounds as a supporting electrolyt. It is assumed that the lithium ions are coordinated internally with the radicalanion A resp. B derived from coumarine. In this way the hydrodimerization is favoured. From 18 different compounds added as possible mediators to the catholyt only pyridine influences moderately the ratio: hydrodimerizationproduct/dihydroproduct.
