9 β-Hydroxymarasmic Acid and Other Sesquiterpenoids from Submerged Cultures of a Basidiomycete [1]

Abstract

Abstract 9 β-Hydroxymarasmic acid, a new sesquiterpenoid, marasmic acid and isovelleral were isolated from cultures of a basidiomycete. Comparison of the antimicrobial activity of the three natural compounds together with two n-butyl ether derivatives of marasmic acid revealed MICs against bacteria in the range of 0 .2 -20 ng/ml. The antifungal, cytotoxic and phytotoxic activities of isovelleral were similar to those exhibited by marasmic acid, whereas the marasmic acid deriva­ tives were considerably less active than the parent compound. Isovelleral was the only compound to show hemolytic activity.
