Abstract
The greater omentum of the mouse — a transparent membranous organ — is especially suited for the direct and continous observation of immune reactions in vitro. Subsequent to intraperitoneal antigenic stimulation milky spots appear, which may be described as two-dimensional “immune-factories”. Methods have been developed for the cultivation of stimulated and nonstimulated omenta and for the prolonged observation of the cellular events by time-lapse microcinematography. It has not yet been possible to induce antibody formation in vitro; however, evidence of continued antibody synthesis was obtained for a period of 3—6 weeks in tissue culture. First observations of the cellular dynamics after primary stimulation in vivo and secondary stimulation in vitro are described.
