Abstract
With the aid of phenylalanine- [carboxyl-14C] the synthesis of rutin and cyanidin glycoside was investigated in etiolated buckwheat seedlings (Fagopyrum esculentum). After exposure to light both substances are formed contemporaneously and in a parallel manner. Their respective specific activities attain a maximum at the same time. Therefore the flavonol does not come into consideration as a precursor for the anthocyanin. The same thing could be shown by feeding 14C-labeled rutin. In this case the labeled rutin was taken up by the plant, but no activity was found in the anthocyanin formed subsequently. After reaching a maximum the specific activity of rutin and cyanidin glycoside decreases continuously. This fact indicates that within the hypocotyl of the buckwheat both substances are further metabolized and cannot be looked upon as endproducts of metabolism.
