Abstract
The kinetics of metastable decomposition of primary fragment ions of organic molecules is studied by a field ionization mass spectrometer. It is shown that a water molecule is eliminated f r om 1-hexanol within a very short time interval after field ionization (10-12<t<10-8 sec).The(M-H2O)+ ion eliminates CH3 , CH4 or C2H4 , respectively, in a second step after about 2x10-6 sec. The equations for calculation of the apparent mass of a metastable secondary fragment ion formed by a fast primary fragment ion are given.
