Ar, Ar/N2, Ar/Xe, Kr and Kr/Xe were tested in a spherical gas scintillation counter. The examinations led to the conclusion that only the four lowest lying states 3P2, 3P1, 3P0, 1P1 of the noble gas atoms in the luminescence process are involved. From a practical point of view, the best energy resolution could be reached by Xe. We got a full width at half maximum of 83 eV for boron X-rays (183 eV).
