Abstract
Growth and shaping of KCl whiskers from the vaporous phase are discussed and demonstrated with micrographs. The particular conditions for the generation of these whiskers are linked to a simple mechanism related to the ideas proposed by AMELINCKX 1 involving the interaction of spiral growth about a dislocation and impurities. The generation of short pyramids and long whiskers, of dendritic branches and kinks as well as whisker-tips and surface phenomena are described.
