Abstract
The effect of sodium halides on the reaction rate and potential of an aluminium single crystal in aqueous solution NaOH is studied. Fluoride, bromide and iodide ions exert an inhibiting effect, which is explained in terms of their specific adsorption on the solid surface, whereas chloride ions have a stimulating effect on the reaction rate, presumably due to the formation of complex surface intermedates.
