1. In April 1992, Professor P Duesberg, a Californian chemist, secured widespread publicity for his view that AIDS is not an infectious disease and that HIV is harmless. Since then, three Nobel Prize winning scientists have written to the Independent, an English newspaper, affirming that ‘the great majority of scientists who have acquainted themselves with the facts [believe] that HIV is the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome’.
