Girolamo Casanate (1620–1700), a Prince of the Catholic Church. Having inherited a nucleus of books from his father, who was Chancellor at the Court of the Neapolitan Viceroy, Cardinal Casanate, over a period of fifty years, augmented the holdings of the Library to 25,000 volumes. He bequeathed the collection to the Dominican Order, of which he was a member, with a substantial capital for its administration and further growth. During the next two centuries, the Casanatense Library increased fivefold, until in 1873 the Italian Government took over its administration. It flourished mainly between 1759 and 1794 under the direction of the Dominican friar, Giovanni Battista Audiffredi (1714–1794). Besides embarking on the compilation of a scientific catalogue of all the printed works in the Library, Audiffredi also started amassing a collection of prints. (
