1. Reference should be made to that article for information regarding the general situation, names and general geographical conditions etc. in Jotunheim.
2. The specific weight was determined by weighing a quantity of snow determined with a cylinder open at both ends on one of the spring balances used by the U. S. A. Hydrographical Bureau for the determination of the water-value of snow. Double measurements were made for the sake of verification, one on 16 June and the other on I August.
3. One consequence of this is the inability of the rain in the upper glacier regions to effect any appreciable melting. The measurements during the summer with regard to the surface-melting have also fully confirmed this.
4. The difference in vapour pressure on the different types of snow and ice has been determined by Tveten partly by measuring their increase in weight in a cooled current of air saturated with moisture. The weight was determined by a torsion balance with a mirror-scale and partly by direct vapour pressure measurements with Toepler Micro-manometer as zero instrument. Both methods give results in entire accordance with one another.
