1. In the Domesday survey there were 28 burgesses in the borough and 41 outside. There were 40 wasted houses. ‘Ibi sunt xl domus vastae postquam rex venit in Angliam.’ The reference to devasted houses hints at the presence of a castle within the borough but none is mentioned:The Domesday Geography of South West England, ed.
