Abstract

In their coverage of the invasion of Iraq, CNN and FNC broadcast two distinct ideological news cultures. An in-depth interview with Aaron Brown reveals the CNN news routine of skepticism. Using visual content analysis methodology, Fox's pro-administration news culture was found clearly different from CNN's, as evidenced by graphic selections, lead story framing, the time allotted to sound bites by U.S. cabinet and military officials, and the visual framing of two iconic stories. An in-depth interview with a key gatekeeper at FNC reveals their intent was not to create an editorial bias but to be seen as a global news player on par with CNN and the American networks. The Fox's newsroom team focus was on achieving respectability by completing the rite of passage into becoming a credible source of war coverage.
