Abstract
This is the second in a series of academic studies investigating the men and women who make key editorial decisions in television newsrooms across Canada. The researchers surveyed television news directors to investigate how they understand the journalistic roles of the reporters who work for them. This research suggests there are differences between news directors in public and private broadcasting. It also suggests that in both public and private broadcasting, news directors' attitudes about roles journalists should play differ somewhat from those of the journalists who work for them.
