1. The so-called “humanist” economics of Lutz and Lux, which relies heavily on the psychological theorizing of Maslow, is a perfect case in point, since Maslow's autonomous and self-actualizing agent is but a utility maximizer with exisfentiully and hierurchically ordered utilities. Etzioni's recent work, notwithstanding its successes, is another example, for while clearly intending to fundamentally restructure the neo-classical paradigm of utility maximizing behavior, Etzioni's “I/We” alternative merely inflates it to include collective utility maximization and to accommodate aesthetic and moral sentiments as valid sources of utility. So, in either case what proclaims itself to be a new economics, ends up being little more than a slightly modified version of the old.
