In patients with cardiogenic shock, emergency revascularization did not significantly reduce overall mortality at 30 days. However, after 6 months, there was a significant survival benefit.

Eur Heart J. 2018;39:1065. The time between the first medical contact to primary PCI is a strong predictor of an adverse outcome. This patient group benefitted most from immediate PCI treatment, so special efforts to shorten contact-to-balloon time should be practiced in particular to these high-risk STEMI patient.

IABP has no effect on all-cause mortality at 6-year long-term follow-up. Mortality remains high, with two thirds of patients with cardiogenic shock dying despite contemporary treatment with revascularization therapy.
