The authors provide the largest published comparison of open versus LPN in 200 patients with tumors smaller than 7 cm. Gill’s group used a similar technique in open and laparoscopic approaches and concluded that although the laparoscopic approach was associated with longer warm ischemia time and more intraoperative and postoperative complications, renal function was preserved equally among the groups and the patients benefited from improved postoperative recovery (less pain, earlier discharge, more rapid convalescence).
