The authors describe the original technique of laparoscopic radical prostatectomy using the transperitoneal approach performed in the first 40 patients between January and October of 1998. The improvement of operative visibility was considerable, allowing for much more precise dissection. Operative and postoperative morbidity was low. Very preliminary oncologic data at that time appeared identical to the results of conventional retropubic surgery.

An overview of the transperitoneal approach with functional and carcinologic assessment after 240 cases. The group from Montsouris performed over 800 procedures. Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy is now performed routinely and is proposed as a first-line surgical treatment for localized prostatic cancer at the authors’ center.

5. Hoznek A, Salomon L, Olsson LE, et al.: Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy: the Cretéil experience. Eur Urol 2001:38–45. The authors describe their operative technique and assess their results in terms of oncologic cure, continence, and potency in 200 patients with clinically localized prostate cancer who underwent laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. Sixty-six of these patients were either referred or operated on during surgical demonstrations.
