Though there are numerous analyses of risk stratification for mortality after bariatric surgery, this is the report on risk factor scoring system for morbidity after bariatric surgery.

LABS consortium is a NIH-supported, prospective, multicenter, large cohort observational study group for assessment of short- and long-term safety of bariatric surgery. This is the most important report of the short-term adverse outcomes by this group due to rigor of the research methodology and 100 % following rate.

J Am Coll Surg. 2011;212:301–9. NSQIP data is from multicenter, prospective dataset with about 200 participating academic and community US hospitals yearly. Although, a previous mortality risk score that estimates postoperative mortality for patients undergoing gastric bypass exists, there is no mortality risk score that predicts postoperative morbidity. The aim of this report was to develop a validated risk calculator for 30-day postoperative morbidity of bariatric surgery patients.
