This large nationwide cohort study found an increased risk of stroke after treatment for herpes zoster: individuals who had received medication had a 127 % increased risk in the first 2 weeks, 17 % between 2 weeks and 1 year, and 5 % after the first year. The increased risk was greatest in the youngest age group (<40 years of age).

This is the largest study showing that herpes zoster is an independent risk factor for vascular disease in the UK population, particularly for stroke, TIA, and MI in subjects affected before the age of 40 years (adjusted hazard ratios of 1.74, 2.42, and 1.49, respectively).
