J Clin Oncol. 2006;24(6):929–36. This trial was primarily designed to test timing of an autologous stem cell transplant. A small number of patients with HLA matched donors had allografts with very high transplant related mortality which closed that arm. With longer follow-up, however, the survival of the allograft arm exceeded the autograft survival, thus underscoring the potential immunologic effect against myeloma.
