This prospective study of 3378 patients, 341 of whom had head and neck cancer, compared the impact of comorbidity in head and neck cancer patients with other cancer sites. The proportion of head and neck cancer patients with moderate to severe comorbidity was 21%; this degree of comorbidity burden was second only to that in patients with lung (40%) and colorectal (25%) cancer. This study demonstrated the importance of comorbidity in patients with head and neck cancer.
