J Clin Oncol 1999, 17:3188–3194. Chemotherapy (MIC) plus palliative care resulted in a significant improvement in median survival (6.9 months vs 4.8 months), with commensurate improvement in 1-year survival rates (28% vs 18%) in patients 75 years of age or under with advanced NSCLC and PS 0-2.

4. Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Collaborative Group: Chemotherapy in non-small-cell lung cancer: a meta-analysis using updated data on individual patients from 52 randomised clinical trials. Br Med J 1995, 311:899–909. This exhaustive meta-analysis demonstrated a 3-month improvement in median survival for chemotherapy plus best supportive care in NSCLC, compared with BSC alone. Overall, a 10% improvement in 1-year survival rate was noted.
