Respir Physiol Neurobiol. 2016;234:89–96. This paper provides a very detailed assessment of normal respiratory-swallowing coordination. The restricted range of lung volumes observed in these subjects confirmed our earlier data suggesting that swallowing optimally occurs from mid to low quiet breathing expiratory lung volumes. It provided the training target, therefore, for the clinical trial used to improve coordination in head and neck cancer patients.
