Sports Med. 1999;27(6):393–408 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10418074 . Reviews studies of the histopathology of sports-related tendinopathies (Achilles, patellar, extensor carpi radialis brevis, and rotator cuff), concluding that the use of ‘tendinopathy’ should be implemented rather than ‘tendinitis’ since histology implies this is a degenerative condition rather than inflammatory.

Am J Sports Med. 2005;33(4):561–7. https://doi.org/10.1177/0363546504270454 . Examines the prevalence of patellar tendinopathy among professional Norwegian athletes from 9 sports. All subjects from the sports included but two (team handball and soccer) included only men. Overall prevealence was 14.2%, highest in volleyball (44.6%+/−6.6%) and basketball (31.9%+/−6.8%), while no cases were reported in cycling or orienteering. Duration of symptoms among those with active patellar tendinopathy was 32+/−25 months & a VISA score of 64+/−19.

Am J Sports Med. 2011;39(9):1984–8. https://doi.org/10.1177/0363546511413370 . Examines the prevalence of patellar tendinopathy among non-elite athletes from various sports in the Netherlands. Patellar tendinopathy was most common in volleyball players and nearly twice as common in male rather than female non-elite athletes, similar to findings in elite-athletes (see above). Prevalence varies between 14.4% and 2.5% among different sports. Younger, taller, and heavier athletes participating in jumping sports seemed to be at higher risk of developing symptoms.
