The purpose of this study was to assess trends in quitting advice received from healthcare professionals among current smokers in South Africa, both before and after the WHO FCTC adopted the Article 14 guidelines, and it explored the relationship between quit advice, e-cigarette use, and quit attempts. While the prevalence of e-cigarette use was not the main aim of the study, this was the first and only study in South Africa that showed the trend of e-cigarette use between 2010 and 2017. And despite the increase in the uptake of e-cigarettes during that period, the study found no significant change in smoking or quitting behaviour, even though the e-cigarette industry argues that e-cigarettes are an effective tool for smoking cessation. The authors are experts in the field of tobacco control.
