In a most recent publication, the investigators report that cannabis is a complex plant and contains a mixture of chemical constituents characterized as cannabinoids like THC, CBD and several others but also new THC-like and CBD-like cannabinoids. The plant also contains non-cannabinoid-type constituents that include non-cannabinoid phenols, flavonoids, terpenes, alkaloids, and others.

Here the investigators have provided an excellent overview of the recent pharmacological advances, novel mechanisms of action, and potential therapeutic applications of such non-psychotropic plant-derived cannabinoids, with special emphasis on cannabidiol, the possible applications of which have emerged in a wide range of clinical conditions including inflammation, diabetes, cancer, affective and neurodegenerative diseases; and also discussed the role of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabivarin, a novel CB1 antagonist that may be potentially useful in the treatment of epilepsy and obesity.
