Clin Orthop Relat Res. 2015;473(6):2131–8. This retrospective study analyzed the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database to evaluate the epidemiologic and economic trends in revision arthroplasty between 2005 and 2010. The authors determined that revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) increased by 39% and revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) by 23% between 2005 and 2010. In addition, they found that patients who undergo revision THA are generally older and sicker than those who undergo revision TKA, which likely contributes to the higher mean hospitalization cost for revision THA as compared to revision TKA.
