Keener and colleagues prospectively report on the long-term risks of rotator cuff enlargement and symptom progression associated with asymptomatic degenerative tears. Their study found a statistically significant increased risk of tear enlargement in full-thickness tears compared to partial thickness tears and controls. Furthermore, tear enlargement was significantly associated with development of symptoms and muscle degeneration/fatty infiltration.
