4. Project MATCH Research Group: Matching alcoholism treatments to client heterogeneity: Treatment main effects and matching effects on drinking during treatment. J Stud Alcohol 1998, 59:631–639. Project MATCH found that Twelve Step Facilitation Therapy (TSF) and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) had better outcome immediately post-treatment on alcohol consumption and alcohol-related negative consequences than Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) in an outpatient sample of over 700 alcoholic patients. There were no differences among the three treatments on measures of employment, psychologic or social functioning, or on liver functioning. None of the patient-treatment matching hypotheses were confirmed.

5. Project MATCH Research Group: Matching alcoholism treatments to client heterogeneity: Project MATCH three-year drinking outcomes. Alcohol Clin Exp Res 1998, 22(6):1300–1311. This paper reports on the 3-year outcome for the Project MATCH study described above. Treatment gains found at 1 year were maintained at 3 years with a slight advantage for TSF on a total abstinence measure. The patient-treatment matching variables of anger and networks supportive of drinking are discussed.
