In this retrospective study, patients who were diagnosed with biliary atresia during infancy were evaluated for the timing of liver injury in biliary atresia. Three infants studied had undergone surgical intervention for other presumed diagnoses with concomitant liver biopsies. Diagnosis of biliary atresia was later confirmed in each of these infants, although their liver biopsies within the first week of life were histologically normal.
