This is a classic article that describes the pathology and morphology of arterial lesions in patients with fibromuscular disease. The authors elucidate the histo-pathologic differentiation of arterial dysplasias. The article in essence deals with the structural basis of renovascular hypertension. The nomenclature proposed is still the standard at the present time.

This paper details one of the first studies that analyzed the natural history of renal artery stenosis. The authors review and detail the evidence that atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis is progressive in nature. While both the atherosclerotic and fibromuscular dysplastic lesions do progress in time, the former type is much more aggressive and could lead to renal artery obstruction ultimately. This article led the way for utilization of surgical techniques aimed at reperfusion to the stenotic kidney.
