Exp Clin Psychopharmacol 2000, 8:97–103. authors examined methadone maintained individuals according to smoking status: tobacco chippers (less than five cigarettes per day), heavy smokers (20 or more cigarettes per day), and non-smokers. They found that 1) average daily dose of cigarette chippers and non-smokers combined was less than that of heavy smokers, and 2) for illicit opiates, as well as for cocaine, a stepwise reduction in percentage of new users is seen for heavy smokers to chippers to nonusers. These findings recommend that smoking cessation be offered to all methadone-maintained individuals.
