Abstract

Abstract Purpose of Review Normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) is a promising new tool in kidney transplantation to improve the outcome of marginal donor kidney transplantation. This review examines the current evidence for NMP in clinical practice and considers how the technology may be used in the future. Recent Findings and Summary There is emerging evidence to suggest that NMP has the potential to expand the donor pool of transplantable organs. The safety and feasibility of NMP have been established in a number of clinical studies but more research is needed to optimise the perfusion conditions. NMP shows promise as a viability assessment tool with particular focus on biomarkers and imaging techniques which provide real-time information to facilitate transplantation decision-making. Moreover, the exciting development of new potential therapeutics such as cell and gene-based therapies which are deliverable during NMP may also improve and recondition grafts prior to implantation.
