2. It is interesting to note in this conjunction that Messmer et al. [3] have recently presented theoretical evidence for ?bent bonds? in the CO2 molecule based on ab initio correlated wavefunction results. These results strongly suggest that the carbon-oxygen double bonds in the CO2 molecule are better represented in terms of a pair of bent bonds than by a combination of a ?-bond and a ? bond
