This study indicates that higher delivery rate of acid into the duodenum found in duodenal ulcer patients is probably not an important factor in duodenal ulcer because efficient neutralization process keeps duodenal bulb pH within normal limits.

2. Ito S, Lacy ER: Morphology of rat gastric mucosal damage. Defense and restitution in the presence of luminal ethanol. Gastroenterology 88:250–260, 1985. This study described morphologic events taking place during ethanol-induced damage of the gastric mucosa and an early restitution of the surface epithelium.

3. Kitahara TK, Guth PH: Effect of aspirin plus hydrochloric acid on the gastric mucosal microcirculation. Gastroenterology 93:810–817, 1987. This experimental study indicates that aspirin-induced H+-ion block diffusion causes formation of thrombi in the mucosal microvessels and constriction of submucosal arterioles; it is therefore the basis for mucosal damage.

4. Mergner WJ, Shamsuddin AM, Trump PF: Concepts of cell injury, in Harmon, J. (ed.): Basic Mechanisms of Gastrointestinal Mucosal Cell Injury and Protection. Baltimore, Wilkins & Williams, 1981, pp. 3–30. This chapter describes sequential ultrastructural and biochemical changes in the cells during reversible and irreversible injury. Ischemic injury was given as an example.

5. Oates PJ, Hakkinen JP: Studies on the mechanism of ethanol-induced gastric damage in rats. Gastroenterology 94:10–21, 1988. This experimental study demonstrates the importance of the gastric mucosal vasculature and microvasculature in ethanol-induced injury.
