3. The term “lattice” as applied to liquid crystals, which was first employed by Dave and Dewar (5), has been criticized. Admittedly, the degree of order in a mesomorphic liquid does not approach that of a crystalline lattice. However, “lattice” is a most convenient short term for “anisotropic molecular arrangement” and, as long as it is enclosed in quotation marks, we see no harmful ambiguity in its use.
