Although now somewhat dated, this analysis highlights the staggering burden of disease particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and very high 3-month case-fatality (up to 70%) in comparison to developed country settings. Updated estimates are in progress but continue to demonstrate a high burden of disease in resource-limited settings with high HIV prevalence even with improved access to ART.
