This study conducted in south-eastern Australia revealed an association of human BU cases with areas where M. ulcerans positive possum faeces are found, providing further evidence for a potential role of possums as an environmental reservoir of infection. The authors suggested that possums may be used as sentinels to monitor human BU in south-eastern Australia.
