JAMA 2003, 289:2560–2572. These are the current US national guidelines for prevention and management of hypertension. The report emphasizes that systolic blood pressure is more important than diastolic; asserts that there is an incremental increase in CVD risk extending down into what was formerly regarded as the normal range of blood pressure, defining a prehypertensive blood pressure; and implies that thiazide diuretics should be used for most patients.

J Hum Hypertens 2004, 18:139–185. These are current British guidelines for management of high blood pressure. They underscore that the chief determinant of the benefit of blood pressure lowering is the level of blood pressure achieved rather than choice of therapy, recommend use of at least two antihypertensive drugs in most patients, and assert that these should be combinations of drugs with different modes of action.
