Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 2003, 100:8538–8542. jThis study identified individuals who were highly sensitive to heat pain versus insensitive to heat pain, and subsequently conducted brain imaging using functional magnetic resonance imaging to determine their cerebral responses to the heat pain stimulus. The pain sensitive group exhibited significantly greater pain-related cerebral activation in several brain regions, including the primary somatosensory cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, and prefrontal cortex compared to their pain insensitive counterparts.
2. Dionne RA, Bartoshuk L, Mogil J, Witter J: Individual responder analyses for pain: does one pain scale fit all? Trends Pharmacol Sci 2005, 26:125–130. This review article presents the case for using individual responder analysis to better capture the effectiveness of analgesic treatments. This can take advantage of the enormous individual differences in treatment responses.
