Abstract

AbstractThe ocean drives our climate, provides more than half of the oxygen we breathe, and has an incredible amount of biodiversity. It is one of our greatest commons, yet through the repercussions of the Anthropocene, we are headed for a tragedy of the commons. The goal of this chapter is to outline the impact of the Anthropocene on the ocean-Other and describe how a phenomenology of place in science education can enhance the lives of our youth to be meaningful within the marine environment so that they can become ocean literate and capable of making the kinds of decisions that benefit, not harm, the marine and aquatic environment.
