Abstract
AbstractThis chapter critically examines the sustainability of urbanization in Europe. The first analysis appraises the changes in urban land cover and urban form in the 2000–2018 period, revealing a complex picture at the regional level. The second analysis applies an evidence-based sustainability assessment framework to three urban forms: compact, polycentric, and diffuse. This revealed trade-offs within and between dimensions of sustainability. The final analysis, based on case study research, examined how interventions affected development practices. This revealed that there is scope for positive change. The Chapter concludes with a reflection on the tensions between the domains of environment and planning and between academia and practice.
